This is a mixed media painting celebrating the unconditional love between mother and child on a 36 x 24 x 3 inch stretched canvas ready for framing.
It is a perfect piece for a nursery. I imagine it somewhere that can be viewed when you’re sitting in your rocking chair soothing baby. It is a unique present for the soon-to-be mom. It is also great for anyone who wants to be reminded of the depth and joy of motherhood.
There are 7 different mixed media layers in this piece which adds depth and beautiful texture effects that are hard to capture in a photograph. The scales on the mermaid’s tail were each handcrafted and hand painted. The rock and baby blanket were created with paper then painted over. Each strand of the mermaid’s hair was glued onto the canvas then painted. The jewels in the mermaid’s hair are reclaimed pieces of jewelry. If you are a fan of Gustav Klimpt, you’ll notice that this particular painting has been inspired by his piece titled “Mother and Child”.
My celebration of mother and child was created with the depiction of a mermaid because mermaids dwell in the depths of the sea. For mystics and lore, water, and particularly the ocean, is symbolic of emotions, intuition and feminine energy. Living in the depths of the sea represents the ability to feel deeply and develop a strong mother’s intuition. When a mother is attuned to her child’s emotional needs, the child grows up with a strong sense of safety and confidence.
