Art Journal with the Moon for October 21-27, 2024

In this post, I share a summary of the moon for the week of October 21-27, 2024 as it moves through the zodiac and interacts with the planets.  I also talk about clearing and releasing with the waning moon.

The Moon This Week

Before I get into how best to work with the moon this week, don’t forget that my “Witches in Pajama Halloween Party” is happening on October 31 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm MT. Get out your art journals and paints or your markers and paper and let’s connect with your spirit guides and ancestors in a creative way and receive the messages they want you to hear at this time in your life. I’d love to have you join us. You can learn more about that here.

This week, we’re in the waning moon phases, which means the moon is gradually losing light as it moves toward the new moon in Scorpio. This is a time for release and reflection, a natural period of letting go of what no longer serves you. It’s a chance to clear out old patterns or emotional baggage, creating space for fresh beginnings. The new moon, happening on the first of the month, is especially powerful for setting intentions because it aligns with both the energy of Scorpio—a sign deeply connected to transformation—and the timing of new beginnings that naturally come with the start of a new lunar cycle and a new month.

As we move closer to this Scorpio new moon, it’s an ideal time to think about the changes you want to make and the dreams you want to bring to life. For me, this is a time when I start planning and visioning for the year ahead. I like to use this period, and even the next couple of lunar cycles, to plant seeds of intention for 2025.

My approach to visioning the year ahead is a slow and considered process. I don’t rush into decisions about what I want to accomplish or manifest in the coming year. Instead, I give myself time to reflect and integrate. I’ll often spend two or three lunar cycles allowing my thoughts, ideas, and desires to percolate. During this time, I’ll try ideas on—meaning I’ll explore how they feel, imagine myself living with these intentions, and see how they resonate with my heart and soul.

It’s important to me that I sort through my true desires and distinguish between what I think I should be doing versus what my heart and soul truly long for. This thoughtful process helps me avoid setting intentions that are based on external expectations or surface-level desires. Instead, I aim to align my intentions with what’s truly meaningful to me. By giving myself time to ponder and reflect, I make sure that when I do set my intentions, they are deeply connected to my authentic self.

When you take time to really reflect on what new beginning you’d like to call into your life, it naturally helps you to discern what you need to release in order to make that happen.

What makes these particular waning moon phases more potent for this type of emotional release is the strong water energy that will be present during the Scorpio new moon. Scorpio is a water sign, and Mars, the ruler of this new moon, is also in a water sign (Cancer), and both the moon is having a relationship with Saturn, which is also in a water sign (Pisces). Water energy is all about our emotional and intuitive realms. When we talk about releasing and clearing with this water energy, it means paying special attention to your emotional landscape.

What emotions are you holding onto that no longer serve you?

What fears, doubts, or insecurities are lingering?

What emotional baggage are you carrying from the past that is preventing you from moving forward?

This is the time to get curious about what needs to be released emotionally so you can create space for the new beginnings you want to manifest. Take a moment to check in with yourself. Ask, “What feelings or emotional patterns am I ready to let go of? What emotional attachments are holding me back from stepping fully into the new chapter I want to create?”

The waning moon this week is inviting you to release on an emotional level and clear space for the new beginnings you want to invite in your life in 2025. Use the water energy of this week to gently wash away old emotional patterns and prepare yourself for the new energy that’s coming.

Here is a more detailed summary of the moon’s energy this week, giving you an overview of what to expect as the moon moves through different signs and phases. However, if you’re looking for more specific ways to work with the moon’s energy each day, be sure to follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. The week kicks off with the disseminating moon moving into the sign of Cancer  on Monday which is the perfect energy to create art that reflects a sense of security. Cancer is deeply connected to home, family, and emotional safety, making it an ideal time to explore how you feel about your personal foundations. A sense of security is about feeling safe, supported, and cared for, both by yourself and by your environment. It’s the emotional comfort that comes from knowing you have a place where you belong, where you are loved and accepted. Your art journal can become a safe container where you explore feelings of security. Maybe you reflect on where you already feel safe, or where you need to create more boundaries to cultivate that feeling in your life. It can also be a space to release fears or anything that makes you feel unsafe or unsettled emotionally.

On Tuesday, the moon in Cancer is having a happy relationship with Mercury and Saturn. Mercury, Saturn and the moon are all in water signs. With Mercury in Scorpio, you’re being invited to explore your emotional depths and have the difficult but necessary conversations with yourself in your art journal. You might find yourself naturally reflecting on old wounds, past pain, or hidden truths that need to come to the surface for healing. Saturn in Pisces reminds you that healing is a process that requires discipline and commitment, but also compassion and surrender. The moon in Cancer ties this all together by creating a safe emotional space for you to do this work. Cancer’s nurturing energy ensures that you’re supported in your emotional processing, allowing you to feel safe as you explore these deeper aspects of yourself.

On Wednesday, the moon is in an intense relationship with Mars. When the moon and Mars come together, you might feel a surge of emotional intensity, which can show up as irritability, frustration, or even a desire to take bold, emotional action. There’s a drive to protect what matters most to you, whether that’s your loved ones, your home, or your personal sense of emotional safety. You could feel more reactive, especially when it comes to situations that trigger your need for security or where you feel emotionally vulnerable. Use your journal to explore any emotions that are bubbling up. This is a powerful time to let out anger, frustration, or hurt that you’ve been holding onto.

With the last quarter moon in Leo having a happy relationship with Venus, Thursday offers supportive energy to release insecurities. The last quarter moon is a time for letting go, reflect on any insecurities or fears you’ve been carrying, especially those related to self-expression or relationships. Leo’s energy encourages you to release anything that’s been holding you back from shining. In your art journal, write about what you’re ready to let go of in terms of how you see yourself, or draw an image that represents breaking free from self-doubt.

On Friday, the last quarter moon is in the sign of Leo. Leo is a sign that’s all about creativity, confidence, and showing up fully as yourself. The last quarter moon is a time of letting go and preparing for the next lunar cycle, so this combination asks you to reflect on how you’ve been expressing yourself and whether you’re living in alignment with who you really are. The Leo energy will encourage you to tap into your courage and self-confidence, helping you let go of anything that’s preventing you from shining as your truest self. It’s a time to ask yourself what you need to release so that you can step more fully into your creative power and inner radiance.

Saturday’s moon in Virgo brings an energy of reflection, evaluation, and reorganization. It’s time to get clear on the details of your life and what’s no longer working for you. Assess, declutter, and make space for what’s truly in alignment with your goals. Where do things feel out of order or messy in your life? Create a page in your art journal that helps you clear your energy or helps you organize your thoughts or emotions.

The week wraps up on Sunday with the last quarter moon in Virgo. Today’s a good day to clear out emotional and energetic information that is weighing you down. Virgo’s energy is connected to the mind, so one powerful form of energetic cleansing is to write down all the emotions, thoughts, or patterns that are no longer serving you. Once you’ve written them down, symbolically “release” them by covering the words with a wash of paint or tearing the page. This act represents letting go of what you’ve been holding onto, making room for fresh energy.

Remember, the moon’s energy is here to support you in embracing who you truly are. By art journaling with the lunar energy this week, you’re not only connecting with the rhythms of nature but also nurturing your soul and manifesting the changes you really want to see in your life so you can more fully align with your true self.
