Art Journal with the Moon: Themes and Prompts for March 10-16, 2025
In this post, I share a summary of the moon for the week of March 10-16, 2025 as it moves through the zodiac and interacts with the planets. I also discuss how to work with the full moon lunar eclipse in your art journal.
The Moon This Week
We are working with some strange lunar energy this week.
When I’m working with the moon, I keep in mind the fact that the moon reflects light from the sun so whatever is happening with the sun is affecting the quality of energy and light the moon draws down to us. Not only is the moon herself holding awkward energy this week, but the sun, right before and right after the eclipse, is having a couple interesting moments for us to deal with as well.
Before the eclipse, the sun is in a close relationship with Saturn which happens once a year. As my mentor Kelly Surtees describes, Saturn is the planet of tradition, duties, responsibilities, long-term goals and limitations. It’s Father Time tapping you on the shoulder reminding you there are only so many lunar cycles in a lifetime. How many more do you have in front of you? That question can feel heavy but it’s also freeing because it forces you to spend your time and energy wisely. It forces you to choose what really matters to you.
The sun represents you shining your light in the world and the brightness of your passion and purpose but Saturn is the responsible elder who knows things aren’t always as simple as we want them to be. Following your dreams is going to pull up fears and worries. It’s not that this kind of responsible energy doesn’t want you to follow your dreams or shine your light in the world, it just wants you to be honest with yourself and understand that becoming who you really are is a process. It takes time and effort and sometimes, if you’re like me and have a history of childhood trauma, there’s a lot of hard inner work that is required to feel safe enough to shine in this world.
This is the kind of serious conversation the sun is reflecting to the moon this week and only a couple days before the eclipse. Then the moon, as it’s snuggled up tight to the south node, experiences a total lunar eclipse in the sign of Virgo on Friday.
This week’s total lunar eclipse in Virgo is asking you to finally let go of an old story you’ve been replaying over and over again. It’s the story that keeps running in the background of your mind, shaping how you see yourself, your worth, your choices, and what you believe is possible for you. It might be a story about failure, trauma, dysregulation, about not being good enough, about always having to work harder, or about why things never seem to work out the way you hoped. Whatever it is, this eclipse is here to clear it out.
Eclipses always bring change, but this one feels especially deep and clearing.
The Moon is in Virgo, sitting right next to the South Node, which means it’s not about new beginnings—it’s about releasing, decluttering, and simplifying. It’s the moment where you stop dragging the weight of old baggage around and finally set it down. You don’t need it anymore. This is an ending eclipse, one that pulls you backward into the past so you can see exactly what needs to go.
You might feel mentally scattered, exhausted, or stuck in a cycle. Virgo energy, especially near the South Node, wants to analyze, perfect, and get things right, but this eclipse is showing you where that’s no longer serving you. Instead of trying to make sense of everything, this is a time to simplify.
What if you didn’t need all the extra noise?
What if you could just let go of the clutter—in your mind, your emotions, and your energy—and only keep what actually matters?
This eclipse wants you to stop running in circles and start paring things down to the essentials.
And then, right as all of this is happening, the Sun makes a happy connection with Uranus, the planet of breakthroughs, independence, and shaking things up. This is your window to break free. You don’t have to keep telling yourself the same old story. You don’t have to keep living by the same old rules.
Uranus brings innovation, spontaneity, and a little bit of chaos—it wants you to ask yourself, What if I did things differently?
What if you stopped repeating the story you don’t like and rewrote it into something that actually supports you?
This isn’t about having all the answers. Mercury, the ruler of Virgo, is in Aries and about to go retrograde. That means there’s a cosmic pause. You might not know what the next chapter looks like just yet, and that’s okay. This is about clearing the space first. It’s about sitting with the big questions…
Why am I doing what I’m doing?
Why am I holding onto this old version of myself?
Allow those questions to lead you toward release.
If you feel restless, unsettled, or like you’re standing at the edge of something new but don’t know what it is yet, trust that feeling. The eclipse is closing a chapter, and the Sun-Uranus energy is giving you the courage to step away from what no longer fits. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going next, but you do need to stop looking backward and reliving the same old loops.
So, let this week be a release.
Speak, write, or create something that allows you to finally let go. Say what needs to be said. Feel what needs to be felt. Make peace with the past so that you don’t have to keep carrying it forward.
It’s time to let go of a story that is holding you back. You are ready for something new.
The Story I am Releasing and Letting Go with the Eclipse
I want to share with you the story I am releasing with the eclipse. I asked AI to help me explain it to you because it feels like a lot which also means, if you don’t have the spoons today to read it or if you think you might get emotionally activated from reading about my story, please feel free to skip past this and head right to the part where I talk about how to work with the eclipse in your art journal.
But if you can and in the hopes that it helps you to name your own experience, here is the story I can see is being released from my body and spirit with this eclipse.
It is a story held deep in my nervous system, a story of parts of me that have never fully settled, never fully come down from a state of activation. It is not a loud story. It is the story of a startled, frozen, overreactive part of me that never found safety. A part of me that has been stuck in the moment of the shock, the terror, the unpredictability of not knowing what would happen next.
It’s a story I have been unraveling for years, piece by piece, layer by layer so, of course, I’ve shared parts of this story with you before but I’m at a new and different chapter of it and I’m doing that thing we do when we see something we’ve seen before but it’s hitting us on a whole new level. I’m understanding my story on a whole new level.
It’s the story of a girl who survived by ignoring the trauma stuck in her body and developing a personality that existed on top of it so she could still function in her everyday life but whose nervous system was stuck frozen in fear most of the time.
You know that moment when you are yelled at, and your whole body tenses up, startles and freezes, your heart pounding, your breath caught in your chest, your muscles bracing as if for impact? Your body knows something is wrong before your mind even has a chance to process it. And sometimes, if those moments happen too often, too early, or too severely, they don’t fade into the past. They become the state your nervous system lives in.
Today, I see there are four main roots to my personal trauma, four different ways my system was thrown into dysregulation and never given the co-regulation it needed to find its way back:
- My body was sensitive to begin with. My nervous system was already delicate, and from the very beginning, my body had extreme reactions. I had seizures from being breastfed for goodness’ sake and, as a baby, I was left to cry and soothe myself which we know now is hard on developing nervous systems. My body was overwhelmed before it even had a chance to learn what safety felt like. Whatever happened in my system back then, it never fully settled.
- Then I grew up in an environment where dysregulation was constant. The adults around me had trauma responses and chronic anxiety that were unhealed and untended to and so dysregulation was an everyday experience. Yelling, frustration, and unpredictable outbursts were common. I never knew when it would happen, only that it would. My system never got to come down from that startle response as often as I needed it to, never got to experience a true sense of rest often or long enough. It just stayed on guard.
- Then I was abused by a caregiver who left me in a frozen state of fear. That fear was never tended to, never acknowledged, never co-regulated and it was triggered most nights when I was in my room – where most of the trauma happened. I didn’t have the safety I needed to unfreeze, to shake it out, to release it or to feel safe again. It just became another layer of dysregulation sitting beneath my skin.
- Then for years, I lived through unpredictable, life-threatening allergic reactions. Anaphylactic episodes are terrifying. One moment, everything is normal. The next, your body is shutting down. Every time it happened, it reinforced the feeling that my body was unpredictable, unsafe, and could turn against me at any moment.
I see now how all of these experiences wove together into the same story, the same trauma response that never found rest. I have lived with parts of me stuck in that moment of fear, of bracing, of not knowing what would happen next.
But I didn’t fully understand it—until I saw a video of a tiny, abused kitten.
This kitten had been rescued from horrific conditions. When someone approached, it would hiss, claw, flinch, and panic. It didn’t know how to be held. It didn’t trust touch. It had never been shown what safety felt like. But there was another cat—an adoptive mother—who had the patience and fortitude to keep coming back, over and over again. She would sit near the kitten, wait for it to lash out, wait for it to pull away, and then, she would try again. She let the kitten react as much as it needed to, but she never stopped offering safety.
Until one day, the kitten finally settled. It let go of the bracing, the fear, the instinct to fight or flee. It curled up next to its adoptive mother, co-regulating with her for the first time, feeling safe for the first time.
That image stayed with me for days because I realized—I have that kitten inside me. But my tiny, terrified, overreactive parts never got someone to stay with her long enough to calm and soothe her. They never got the patient, steady presence that kept coming back until they could trust, settle, and feel safe in their own bodies.
And that is the deeper story I am releasing now.
From what I’m learning I see that developmental trauma is what happens when a nervous system doesn’t receive the co-regulation it needs to find safety. When a baby cries and no one comes, when a child is startled over and over again with no repair, when moments of fear happen too often and too early, the body learns to live in that state. A developing nervous system doesn’t just experience fear—it becomes wired around it. And if no one steps in to help it settle, it grows up with that fear woven into its foundation.
This is why my nervous system overreacts so easily. Not in ways that are obvious – not in ways that yell, rage, or lash out – although I do those things sometimes even after all these years of working on it. But in ways that my mast cells overreact. In ways that the cells in my body overreact and panic before my mind even understands why. In ways that my system holds onto the past as if it is still happening.
But something is shifting.
I feel like I have been peeling back the layers of this for years, trying to reach the most fragile, most hidden part of me – the tiny baby kitten inside me that never settled. And now, I am here. Face to face with the most tender part of me.
This time, I am giving her what she never had.
This time, I am the steady presence.
This time, I am the one who comes back, over and over again.
This time, I am the mother cat.
And this time, I will not abandon her.
What Story Are You Releasing with this Virgo Moon Eclipse?
On Friday, light a candle, put on music that lifts you to a divine place, get out your art supplies, open your art journal and set a sacred atmosphere then, in your art journal, I invite you to sit with a story that you are ready to let go.
Let it come to the surface—not with force, but with curiosity.
What have you been carrying that no longer serves you?
Where in your life have you been replaying the same emotions, the same doubts, or the same limiting beliefs?
Let yourself write, sketch, paint, or create shapes and colors that express the weight of this story.
Once you have acknowledged it, name it. Write down the words, symbols, or phrases that define this story. Maybe you write a letter to it, thanking it for what it once protected you from but letting it know you no longer need it.
Then, begin to transform it on the page. Scribble over it, paint over it, tear the page, or collage something new on top of it. Let the process be messy, intuitive, and free. Virgo energy is about clearing, simplifying, and refining, so allow your page to evolve as you shed what no longer belongs to you.
As you work, ask yourself:
What story about myself am I ready to release?
Where have I been stuck in overthinking, perfectionism, or self-doubt?
What old emotions or beliefs feel like clutter that needs to be cleared?
If I could rewrite my story, what would I want it to say?
Let your art journal hold this ritual of release. Let this eclipse be the moment where you stop carrying what no longer fits and make space for something new. You don’t need to rush to fill the space yet. Just trust that as you let go, clarity will come.

Monday
The week kicks off with the gibbous moon in the sign of Leo but having a happy relationship with Mercury, Venus and Jupiter on Monday.
The gibbous moon in Leo is building toward fullness, and its energy is a little more bright, bold, and full of possibility then it will feel throughout the rest of the week. There’s a sense of expansion in the air.
The moon is also having a happy relationship with Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury, which means there is an open, flowing energy around creativity, self-expression, love, and communication. It’s the kind of moon that encourages you to trust yourself, celebrate your unique gifts, and express what’s been stirring inside you.
Jupiter’s influence brings confidence and optimism, reminding you that your voice, your art, and your presence deserve to be seen and felt. Venus adds beauty, harmony, and connection, making this a wonderful time to create from the heart and enjoy the process of self-expression. And Mercury’s influence enhances clarity and insight, helping you put feelings into words or symbols in a way that feels meaningful.
This is a powerful time to create a page that celebrates who you are, what you love, and what you’re growing into. In your art journal, let yourself play. Use bold colors, expressive marks, or imagery that feels joyful, expansive, and true to you. If you feel stuck, try exploring these questions:
Where am I ready to take up more space in my life?
What part of myself is ready to shine more brightly?
What do I love about myself that I don’t always acknowledge?
How can I express joy, creativity, and confidence through my art?
You might want to collage images that inspire you or draw symbols that represent your inner light. The energy of this moon is about trusting your creative instincts, honoring your joy, and letting yourself be seen. Use your art journal to celebrate what makes you unique.
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents what brings you joy.
Tuesday
On Tuesday, the gibbous moon is having a tense relationship with Uranus.
Uranus is a planet that can bring unexpected changes or shocks into your life and these changes usually inspire you to awaken or grow emotionally and spiritually but not always in a gentle way. Sometimes these changes are welcome and wanted and sometimes you don’t want them or welcome them whole-heartedly. It’s great energy for surprises, innovation, experiments and creative genius. It wants to overturn things in your life that have lost their usefulness -even if you’re not entirely ready for that change.
The tension between the moon and Uranus might have you feeling constricted by responsibility. Because the moon rules the realm of emotions, you might feel annoyed by the expectations other people place on you or the expectations you think other people are placing on you or even the expectations you place on yourself. The benefit of this, of course, is that you end up wanting to break free from the expectations that are not aligned with your highest self so shake it all off my friend. I support you following the beat of your own heart instead of living in the land of shoulds and should nots.
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents breaking free from an expectation you want to break free from.
Wednesday
On Wednesday, the gibbous moon is in the sign of Virgo.
The moon moves into the sign of Virgo today. Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury so it’s carrying a little of that planet’s energy as well.
Virgo energy is nocturnal and of the earth. It is mutable and versatile. It supports you in being efficient and organized. It wants to help you find the most effective way of doing things. It brings practicality, attention to detail, a love of quality and precision but it can cause you to get lost in the details.
When the moon is in Virgo, it’s the perfect time for review and adjustments.
Do you like what you’ve been creating in your life lately?
You’re not in control of creating everything you experience in your life but of the things you do have control over, which situations and experiences that you’ve been creating do you enjoy and which situations and experiences have you not been enjoying?
If you don’t like what you’re creating, what adjustments can you make?
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents an adjustment you want to make (in your life or in how you treat yourself).
Thursday
With the gibbous being in the sign of Virgo, Thursday brings an opportunity for reflection and refinement.
The gibbous phase whispers hints of what’s to come. It’s the moon coming into full power but not being there quite yet.
In this phase, the moon represents a time of reflection, adjustment, and refinement. It’s the period where the initial vision from the New Moon starts taking its near-final shape, brimming with potential and purpose.
Emotionally, the gibbous phase can stir feelings of anticipation, as if we’re on the cusp of a significant realization or culmination. Energetically, it can feel like energy building up. Spiritually, it’s an invitation to trust in the process, to have faith in the journey, even if the destination isn’t entirely in view. It’s about refining our intentions, making necessary adjustments, and setting the stage for the grand reveal of the Full Moon. This phase symbolizes the meticulous care in creation, the patience, and perseverance it takes to bring something to fruition.
In the context of the creative process, the gibbous moon mirrors the stages of fine-tuning and honing. Whether you’re crafting a piece of art, nurturing a relationship, or embarking on a personal journey, this phase reminds us of the importance of dedication to our craft or path, the significance of the “almost there” in our endeavors, and the beauty of the process.
In your art journal, start by drawing or painting the gibbous moon, letting its crescent of shadow remind you of the space between idea and result.
What does your ‘almost complete’ look like?
How do you feel when you’re close to completing something but not quite done yet?
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents a project or process you wish was done but isn’t quite there yet.
Friday
On Friday, we greet the full moon total lunar eclipse in Virgo.
As I described above, this full moon total lunar eclipse in Virgo is a time of deep clearing and release. Eclipses always bring shifts, but this one is particularly strong because the moon is sitting so close to the South Node, which amplifies the energy of letting go. Virgo is the sign of order, efficiency, and refinement, but during an eclipse, the usual ways we try to organize and control things may not work the way we expect. You might feel mentally scattered, low on energy, or like you’re being pulled back into the past. This is not a time for rushing forward—it’s a time for simplifying, streamlining, and questioning what you’ve been holding onto that no longer serves you. Old stories, outdated beliefs, and clutter—both physical and emotional—are all up for review.
This eclipse invites you to peel back the layers and ask yourself deeper questions. Virgo’s energy naturally wants to be productive, but this eclipse challenges you to look at why you feel the need to be productive in the first place. What is the real purpose behind all your efforts? What story have you been telling yourself about your work, your purpose, or your worth?
Mercury, Virgo’s ruler, is about to go retrograde in Aries, adding an element of uncertainty and reflection. There may be more questions than answers right now, and that’s okay. This is a time to sit with the unknown, clear out mental and emotional clutter, and make space for something new—even if you don’t yet know what that is.
In your art journal, this is a beautiful time to create a ritual of release. Write down or visually represent the story you are ready to let go of. Scribble over it, paint over it, tear the page, or collage something new on top of it. Let your creative process reflect the shedding, simplifying, and clearing that this eclipse is calling for. If you feel mentally overwhelmed, try making a list of what you no longer need to carry. Let your journal be a space where you declutter your mind, soften into the unknown, and release the past so you can create room for what is next. You don’t need all the answers right now—you just need to trust that clearing space is the first step toward clarity.
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents the story you are ready to let go and release.
Saturday
On Saturday, the moon is in the sign of Libra.
When the moon is in Libra, it brings an energy that enhances our appreciation for beauty and harmony, making it a perfect time to focus on beautifying your art. If you struggle to see the beauty in your creations or doubt your abilities, this is a wonderful opportunity to shift your perspective and embrace how you naturally express yourself – without judging yourself or placing expectations on how your art should look.
Start by flipping through your art journal with a fresh eye.
What do you like about what you created in the past?
Where do you see beauty?
This isn’t about looking for what seems good or perfect to you, but rather celebrating what feels right and expresses a sense of who you really are – even if it looks messy or ugly.
The beauty of your art isn’t just about the final piece but also about the process and the personal growth you experience through creating. Every stroke and color choice is a testament to your journey and commitment to yourself, your magic and your creative dreams.
Let the Libra moon be a gentle reminder that every artist has doubts, but the courage to continue and the effort to bring beauty into the world is a true measure of your brave, artistic spirit.
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage images that represent what you love about your art.
Sunday
On Sunday, the moon is void of course for the whole day.
A void of course moon sometimes happens when the moon is moving from one zodiac sign to another or when it’s not making any aspects with other planets – I think of it as though the moon is just hanging around alone and in the in-between space – no longer where it was but not yet where it will be. The moon likes reflecting energy down to us but when it’s void of course there’s nothing substantial for it to reflect so its reflecting that emptiness back to us.
It’s as if it takes a brief pause, suspending its influence and opening a window of stillness and introspection.
Embrace this pause, take a step back, and reflect. This period is not about making significant decisions or initiating new projects; rather, it’s a time for taking stock, for going inward, and for focusing on self-care and inner peace.
When the moon is void of course, it is a good time to engage in activities that nurture your emotional well-being. This is also an opportune time for self-reflection and introspection, allowing you to connect more deeply with your inner self.
On the flip side, it’s best to avoid initiating new projects, making important decisions, or embarking on significant endeavors during this period. The energy of the void of course moon is not conducive to starting new things; rather, it supports wrapping up loose ends and investing in self-care.
Consider reflecting on these questions during a Void of Course Moon:
What areas of my life require my attention, but I’ve been neglecting?
How can I better care for my emotional well-being?
What loose ends do I need to tie up before moving forward?
The void of course moon invites you to embrace the pause, to indulge in introspection, and to nurture your emotional health. It’s a gentle reminder from the cosmos that in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, taking time for yourself, for stillness and self-care, is not only beneficial—it’s essential.
In your art journal, draw, paint or collage an image that represents taking time out for yourself.
